Welcome Back!
I hope everyone had a restful, if not adventure filled, break from school. As we return to our routines, I’d like to highlight one that is often misunderstood, but very helpful and a core part of our school’s philosophy. That is: Jane Nelsen’s Positive Discipline, and specifically Classroom Meetings.
Classroom Meetings are a Positive Discipline practice that foster respect, responsibility, and cooperation. They help students build community, regulate emotions, and resolve conflicts constructively. They shift discipline from reaction to prevention. They integrate SEL skills into routine practice, and help students learn to take responsibility, and resolve conflicts respectfully.
Having taught at numerous schools before Antioch Charter Academy, I can’t speak highly enough about the benefits of using Classroom Meetings in our daily routine. Students at our school have a voice, learn to use it, and witness/participate in calm and respectful conflict resolution discussions regularly.
How It Looks in the Classroom:
Students and teachers gather regularly to:
Share compliments and appreciation
Talk through challenges
Brainstorm solutions together
Teaches respectful listening, empathy, and conflict resolution.
Problem-Solving Focus
Mistakes are treated as opportunities to learn, not reasons for punishment.Encouragement Every Day
Teachers help students notice their strengths and take pride in their progress.
Do Classroom Meetings make misbehaviors disappear?
The most frustrating thing for students is that this process takes time. It is not immediate punishment or shame for the person who makes the mistake, rather it is acknowledgement of the mistaken behavior and helpful problem solving on how to change it. Changing behaviors requires students to acknowledge what they did and understand why it was hurtful, disrespectful, or dangerous (and just to be clear, Classroom Meetings are not used to resolve physical altercations-particularly with older students). Still, regular feedback and use of this process, absolutely helps students begin to take responsibility for their mistakes. and learn to change their behavior.
Ultimately, our use of Classroom Meetings aims to help:
Students feel respected, valued, and safe.
Classrooms to become cooperative, caring communities.
Children build the confidence and skills they need to succeed—both in school and in life.
We are confident that the use of Classroom Meetings helps our students learn valuable social and emotional skills that our world needs now more than ever!

Charter Council: The Charter Council is our governing board. The board meets usually on the second Thursday of the month @ 4PM. Please check the calendar for the next meeting date/time, or call the office at 925-755-7311 to confirm. These meetings are open to the public – all are welcomed!

REMINDERS
School Lunch Order Form – https://forms.gle/
You MUST order meals in advance in order to receive them or else we may not have a meal available for your student. Breakfast and Supper will be the same for all students, while lunch has a menu that you can choose one entree from. No delivery services are allowed on campus.
Absences, Tardies, Leaving Early: If your student will be absent, or tardy, please call the office at 925-755-7311, or email your student’s classroom, before 8:00am. Please make sure to check into the office if your student arrives late. If your student needs to depart early, the person picking up the child must call the office at (925) 755-7311 so the office can retrieve the student prior to walking into the office to sign out their student. Please remember to request an “Independent Study” or “IS” every time you email/call to report an absence. This helps the school, which helps your student!
Clothes Donation Bin: is a great way to have our unclaimed lost and found items find a new home, and it is actually a form of fund raising for the school. When people donate clothes, the owners of the bin, Tree Machine, will give money to the school. The bin is for clothes only. Please make sure to bag the clothes before you put them in the bin. Thank You.

¡Bienvenidos de nuevo!
Espero que hayan tenido un descanso tranquilo, aunque también lleno de aventuras, de la escuela. Al regresar a nuestras rutinas, me gustaría destacar una práctica que a menudo se malinterpreta, pero que es muy útil y parte fundamental de la filosofía de nuestra escuela: la Disciplina Positiva de Jane Nelsen, y en particular las Reuniones de Clase.
Las Reuniones de Clase son una práctica de Disciplina Positiva que fomenta el respeto, la responsabilidad y la cooperación. Ayudan a los estudiantes a construir comunidad, controlar las emociones y resolver conflictos de forma constructiva. Transforman la disciplina de la reacción a la prevención. Integran habilidades de aprendizaje socioemocional (SEL) en la práctica diaria y ayudan a los estudiantes a aprender a asumir la responsabilidad y a resolver conflictos con respeto.
Habiendo enseñado en numerosas escuelas antes de Antioch Charter Academy, no tengo palabras para describir los beneficios de usar las Reuniones de Clase en nuestra rutina diaria. Los estudiantes de nuestra escuela tienen voz, aprenden a usarla y presencian/participan regularmente en debates tranquilos y respetuosos sobre resolución de conflictos.
Cómo se ve en el aula:
Los estudiantes y los profesores se reúnen regularmente para:
Compartir elogios y aprecio
Hablar sobre los desafíos
Idear soluciones juntos
Enseña a escuchar con respeto, empatía y resolución de conflictos.
Enfoque en la resolución de problemas
Los errores se tratan como oportunidades para aprender, no como motivos de castigo.
Ánimo diario
Los profesores ayudan a los estudiantes a reconocer sus fortalezas y a enorgullecerse de su progreso.
¿Las reuniones en el aula hacen desaparecer las malas conductas?
Lo más frustrante para los estudiantes es que este proceso lleva tiempo. No se trata de un castigo inmediato ni de avergonzar a la persona que comete el error, sino de reconocer el comportamiento erróneo y de encontrar una solución útil para corregirlo. Cambiar de comportamiento requiere que los estudiantes reconozcan lo que hicieron y comprendan por qué fue hiriente, irrespetuoso o peligroso (y, para que quede claro, las Reuniones de Clase no se utilizan para resolver altercados físicos, especialmente con estudiantes mayores). Aun así, la retroalimentación regular y el uso de este proceso ayudan sin duda a los estudiantes a asumir la responsabilidad de sus errores y a aprender a cambiar su comportamiento.
En definitiva, nuestro uso de las Reuniones de Clase tiene como objetivo ayudar a:
Que los estudiantes se sientan respetados, valorados y seguros.
Que las aulas se conviertan en comunidades cooperativas y solidarias.
Que los niños desarrollen la confianza y las habilidades que necesitan para tener éxito, tanto en la escuela como en la vida.
Estamos seguros de que el uso de las Reuniones de Clase ayuda a nuestros estudiantes a aprender valiosas habilidades sociales y emocionales que nuestro mundo necesita ahora más que nunca.
