FLAG FOOTBALL
ACA and ACAII 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have an opportunity to play flag football as intramural teams against the other middle schools in Antioch. There will be a boys team and a girls team. Tryouts will be October 1st and 3rd. Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 – 5 beginning October 15th. Games are on Wednesdays and begin October 30th. More info and a permission slip are being sent home today. Students must return the permission slip by this Friday so we know if there are enough players to have both a boys team and a girls team. If you are interested in coaching or being a team parent, please reply to this email.
HOMEWORK
Science – We continue to learn about nutrition. This week, we focus on sugar and food labels. Students should be tracking food and beverages before their science class tomorrow. Please see Google Classroom for directions if you are absent.
Math – Did you know there are 3 different math classes in Middle School? Most in-class and all homework assignments will be posted in each math class Google Classroom. Paper assignments may be turned into the classroom and do not need to be attached to Google Classroom. In general, all students will have:
*a daily in class assignment, to be done in class, Monday to Thursday
*a daily homework assignment, due the next day, assigned Monday to Thursday
*20 minutes of Fact Fluency practice per week. Mrs. McCutcheon recommends doing it for 5 minutes per day.
*weekly or every other week quizzes
SPA (Social Political Action Project)
This trimester’s big question is, “How can changing habits impact the health of ourselves and our school community?” Students are in one of nine groups based on the health related topic that most interested them. This week, groups are going to research and begin working to make a positive change in the school community. Please ask your student which group they are a part of.
*Teaching a basketball elective to increase the amount of exercise of students at school
*Increasing awareness of importance exercise by leading a walking group at recess
*Increasing awareness of suicide prevention by presenting to classes
*Increasing awareness of and strategies for maintaining mental health
*Increasing awareness of the importance of limiting screen time
*Decreasing the amount of litter on campus
*Raising awareness of the importance of sleep and how to get better sleep
*Teaching students about eating healthier by having a taste testing of fruits and vegetables
*Increasing access to feminine hygiene products in the outdoor restroom
Music
” Beginning Instrumental Music classes will begin meeting on Monday, September 23 during SSR time. The last opportunity to return the yellow sign-up form is Wednesday, September 18. Students will learn exercises and musical studies to do at home. Instruments will not go home for a few weeks, until students demonstrate, during their music lessons, their ability to handle the instruments correctly and carefully. I am looking forward to more fine instrumentalists at ACA II. Thank you, Mrs.Vela, instrumental music teacher.”
“I am encouraged by the good sounds I’m hearing from the returning instrumental music students! Parents & guardians, please ask this question of your son or daughter on a daily basis: Have you practiced your instrument today? The more practice, the better the playing! We may have some special performance opportunities this fall, before the holidays, plus our January Winter Concert. Again, my thanks for your support, Mrs. Vela.”
