1. Trips to Family Harvest Farm: We have 2 more trips planned to Family Harvest Farm.  One of the trips will be a small group of students, and the last trip will be the whole class.  Please look at the schedule below, and the day your student is attending, please consider driving – we need 2-3 parent drivers for each small group; 4-5 parent drivers for the whole class. For the small group trips, drivers need to be here by 9:40am, and we will return to campus by 12pm. Drivers need to have a copy of their 100,000/300,000 liability car insurance on file in the office.  If you can drive, please let us know how many students you can take. Students not attending the farm will be working on assignments with the other MS teachers who stayed back.

 

2State Testing Dates:  Make sure you do not schedule any appointments/trips/etc during these dates.  It is very DIFFICULT on your student if they miss a test(s) and have to make them up. Testing takes place in the mornings.

3.  Guest Speaker on Friday morning.  Cathy Cachola, from the AUSD Central Kitchen, is coming to our class to share about how she oversees the feeding of over 15,000 students a day. 
 
4.  Food, Inc. Project For this unit, students have formed groups (see attached doc) and will design a booth to teach the whole school about their topic.  Students will work in groups of 3, and also in groups of 6, on this project.  There will be regular check-ins, with the final project due the last week in May.

This Week’s Assignments/Homework: not inclusive – assignments may be added.  Class assignments not finished during class become homework.
  • Vocabulary: 10 minutes a day on Membean
  • Literature Book: Omnivore’s Dilemma; pacing guide for reading, RJW + Reflection due on Fridays, quiz on Fridays
  • CommonLit: Your food choices affect Earth’s climate; due Friday
  • Current Events: Work in groups of 2. Interview your parents, grandparents about their rules in the kitchen. Then do some more research on the Internet on your topic. No need to record this info, but use it to help you create an informative poster; due Friday
  • Writing (2 week assignment): Read over the assignment (attached) very carefully. Ask questions in class. W#2 is due in class Friday. W#3 is due in class next week on Thursday.; part 1 due Friday
  • Writers Workshop/Portfolio (yearlong project)due May 6
  • Math: CPM, Khan, POD, pacing guide with due dates, assessments on Fridays
  • Science “Plate Tectonics”: participation & assignments; due on Science day
  • Food, Inc Project:  researching topic
