Dear ACA Families,
As a parent of two ACA alumni, and current college and high school graduates, I want to reassure you that coaching my own children through their homework could be very frustrating and rife with disagreements. This was particularly true when it came to math. Despite the fact that I consider my math instruction my area of strength as a teacher, there is something about the parent-child dynamic that can make supporting your own child’s math success difficult.
The good news is that I have a pro-tip to share! Harvey Mudd College (my son’s alma mater) offers a FREE HOMEWORK HOTLINE. This over-the-phone tutoring service for K-12 students in math and science, is open Monday through Thursday from 6-9 pm PT, during the academic year. Most students who call are in middle or high school; asking for help with trigonometry, geometry or algebra, however this service is also a good place to get parent support when helping your child with either math or science homework. I have not used it personally; however, have met some parents who consider it priceless.
Obviously, your child’s ACA teacher is the best person to ask for help/support with their classroom assignments; however, we all know what it can be like in those evening hours, when homework stress derails a peaceful home. Hopefully, this option provides a little relief from those potentially tearful evenings.

First Fridays: Because of the Oct Break, there is no First Friday in Oct. See you in Nov!
Cougars in Action: Our new school motto, “Cougars Take Action”, is the reason for our new “Cougars in Action” event! This year, we have set aside two days for students, staff, and soon, parents, to come together and make a difference around our campus. On October 11th, we will have our first day. The students and staff will do a few small projects, and then spend time brainstorming ideas for the next event (where we will ask you to join us)! Do you know these types of activities are part of our Graduate Goals?
Goal #2 Be able to work collaboratively and cooperate with others
Goal #6 Be able to accomplish goals
Goal #9 Demonstrate use of Lifeskills and Lifelong guidelines in daily life
Goal #11 Be able to contribute to society and feel empowered to make change
FAMILY NETWORK (FN) HAPPENINGS 
The ACA Family Network is made up of ACA adults who volunteer for fundraisers and social events for the enrichment of our children. The money we raise goes back to our school for study trips, family activities, assemblies, and classroom supplies. If you have a child/grandchild/niece/nephew/

Family Network Meetings are usually the second Tuesday of each month. The board welcomes and encourages all ACA families to attend the meetings. Check with the calendar below to find out the next meeting.

Popcorn Fridays Volunteers Needed 
We need volunteers to help out with popcorn sales each Friday 2:30pm – 3:30pm
Help set up, make popcorn, sell candy/popcorn and clean-up
REMINDERS & FYIs 
Late Arrivals/Early Departure: Please make sure to check into the office if your student arrives late. If your student needs to depart early, the person picking up the child must call the office at (925) 755-7311 so the office can retrieve the student prior to walking into the office to sign out their student.
Parking Lot Safety – Let’s Keep ALL Our Students, Staff & Families SAFE!
SLOW DOWN
Everyone needs to use crosswalks!
Listen to the staff’s instructions – they are trying to keep everyone safe, and to keep drop off/pick up running smoothly.
Do not tell your students to cut through the parking lot to reach you – cars that are backing up may not see your student. Students should be picked up using the carpool lane, or using the crosswalk, they can walk to their cars which are parked on the street/in front of the park.
When it is your turn to enter the carpool lane, pull all the way forward, so up to 6 vehicles can load/unload their charges at a time.
Do not move forward in the carpool lane until all children have entered/exited their vehicles in front of you – a fender bender could severely injure a child who is partially in a vehicle.
When leaving the parking lot, please drive the speed limit so our students walking to school are safe.
Thank you for keeping everyone safe – remember picking up/dropping off is only a few minutes out of your day, but an injury could last a lifetime!!
Yearbook Fundraiser
: Every Wednesday morning the yearbook staff will be selling donuts in front of the gate from 7:50-8:10. We are doing this to fundraise to purchase yearbooks for the 8th graders, the school and the yearbook staff. Extra money will go to lowering the price of the yearbook for everyone! Donuts are priced from $1-3.
Charter Council: The Charter Council is our governing board. The board meets usually on the second Thursday of the month @ 4PM. Please check the calendar for the next meeting date/time, or call the office at 925-755-7311 to confirm. These meetings are open to the public – all are welcomed!

You MUST order meals in advance in order to receive them or else we may not have a meal available for your student. Breakfast and Supper will be the same for all students, while lunch has a menu that you can choose one entree from.
Absences and Tardies – Daily Attendance is expected: If your student will be absent, or tardy, please call the office at 925-755-7311, or email your student’s classroom, before 8:00am.
Remind: This is another way for the school to quickly inform you on what is happening on campus. Never miss another minimum day schedule, or a whole school event. You can receive messages through email or through texting – you decide! If you have not signed up yet, please contact your student’s classroom for the code – each grouping has their own code!

Como padre de dos ex alumnos de ACA y graduados actuales de la universidad y la escuela secundaria, quiero asegurarles que asesorar a mis propios hijos en sus tareas puede ser muy frustrante y estar plagado de desacuerdos. Esto era particularmente cierto cuando se trataba de matemáticas. Este servicio de tutoría por teléfono para estudiantes de K-12 en matemáticas y ciencias está abierto de lunes a jueves de 6 a 9 p. m., hora del Pacífico, durante el año académico. La mayoría de los estudiantes que llaman están en la escuela intermedia o secundaria; pedir ayuda con trigonometría, geometría o álgebra; sin embargo, este servicio también es un buen lugar para obtener el apoyo de los padres cuando ayudan a su hijo con la tarea de matemáticas o ciencias.
