Antioch Charter Academy

Minimum Day – school ends at 12pm today

Newsletter for Antioch Charter Academy/TLCS Families and Stadff Volume 25, Issue 8, October 13, 2020

Dear ACA Families,

As we enter the 7th month of this pandemic, and likely several more months of disruption, I thought it would be fun to share a list of family activities and virtual tours that will help break up the winter months ahead. Fortunately, the weather rarely prevents outdoor exploration in our beautiful neck of the woods, but when it does, the “virtual” field trips listed could substitute for good family memories.

Enjoy!- Mrs. Cordova

Virtual Tours

Take a Hike or a Bike-Schedule a time each day for exercise, whether a bike ride, a walk, a dance party, or a kid-friendly Youtube workout video.

Bring on the board games. This classic family pastime has a hidden benefit: Board games can be good for kids’ linguistic, cognitive, and social development.

  • Go to a drive-in. Check out Concord’s West Wind Solano Drive-In!

12 Famous Museums from around the world.

  • Get kitchen-savvy. If there’s one skill your child will always use, it’s cooking. Check out our guide for creating age-appropriate roles for kids in the kitchen.

  • Read, then watch. Which was better, the book or the movie? Find out by reading a book as a family, then watching the movie.

15 virtual Zoo tours:

  • Plan a scavenger hunt. Create your own list of items for kids to find around the house, then set them loose to search for a pink sock, a measuring spoon, or other simple objects.

  • Crack open a good book. Or, if audiobooks are your child’s preference, tune in to Librivox, which features thousands of classics in the public domain for free. Audible, too, is offering many kids’ titles for free as long as schools are closed.

  • Get a genre. A special theme makes everything more fun. As a family, make a plan to watch all of a certain type of movie -perhaps all the Disney princess movies, all the Harry Potter movies, or favorite ‘60s musicals.

The Louvre

The Vatican:

  • Try a science experiment. Everyday household items are fair game for science experiments for kids of any age. Find a  project on websites like Science Fun and Science Bob.

  • Arts and Crafts. Search projects appropriate to your child’s age on Youtube or Pinterest.

  • Have a virtual movie night. Apps like Netflix Party and Metastream offer a new way to watch movies with friends. By synching your video play and adding a group chat, you can watch “together” from a distance.

Positive Discipline Parent Training: we are excited to announce we will be having a “Special Guest” holding a Positive Discipline Parent Training on Zoom for both ACA & ACA II! This is a great opportunity to learn how to incorporate positive discipline at home, especially during distance learning. Please come prepared with questions on October 19 at 6:00-7:30pm. The meeting will be recorded and uploaded on our school’s website.

The ACA Family Network is made up of ACA adults who volunteer for fundraisers and social events for the enrichment of our children. The money we raise goes back to our school for study trips, family activities, assemblies, and classroom supplies. If you have a child/grandchild/niece/nephew/etc. at ACA, then come join us & help make a difference!

Family Network Events:

Family Network Meetings are the first Thursday of each month.  Meetings will be held by Zoom until we can go back to campus.  The board welcomes and encourages all ACA families to attend the meetings.  The meetings are not just for board members, but for all ACA family members.

Annual Give: Annual Give: $265 donated to date! Use the attached form and information to make your donation and help us reach our goal of raising $12,000 this year. Donations can be submitted via PayPal to, venmo to @Beth-Rottier, or checks mailed to the school with the attached form. Remember, your donation is tax deductible and helps to fund many materials and programs offered at our school.

Grab & Go Meals: Thanks to an extension of the Summer Feeding waiver from the USDA, all students from ACA I & II (and any siblings 18 and under) may pick up a bag containing FREE breakfast, lunch, supper and a snack M-F from any one of our 12 feeding sites.  The waiver is good through the end of December.  Please visit for the list of sites and menus.

Charter Council: the Charter Council is our governing board.  The board meets on a monthly basis – usually the first Thursday of the month @ 4PM.  Please check the calendar for the next meeting date/time, or call the office at 925-755-7311 to confirm.  These meetings are open to the public – all are welcomed!

Absences and Tardies -Daily Attendance is expected: If your student will be absent, or tardy, please call the office at 925-755-7311, or email your student’s classroom, before 8:00am. Even though we are currently doing Distance Learning, roll is still taken EVERY DAY.

Updates on Distance Learning and Reopening: ACA I and II will continue with fully Distance Learning until the November break.  This means ALL students will be distance learning through November 20th. We continue to evaluate the situation and are working to prepare the site and staff for in person learning.
