Advocacy for Instrumental Music
Multiple studies have shown important connections between success in school and instrumental music training:
__On standardized tests, students in schools with quality instrumental music programs scored 22% better in English and 20% better in math than those with no instrumental music program, regardless of the socioeconomic level of the school.
__Nearly 100% of past winners of the prestigious Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology (for high school students) play one or more musical instruments.
__Music study and positive algebra achievement of students (age 10-12) most likely takes place because this age is a time in which a proliferation of new synapses occurs in the developing brain.
__Participation in performance groups provides motivation for and requires disciplined effort and systematic work pointed toward the achievement of a worthy goal. These skills are desirable for success in school and future employment.
__Students playing a Western instrument like the flute or violin for multiple years had significantly better verbal memory and verbal retention than did untrained students. (Improved listening skills help each child learn, including the ELL students)
__A 2004 Stanford University study showed that mastering a musical instrument improves the way the human brain processes parts of spoken language.
__A quote from the President of the National Association of Elementary School Principals 2002-2003: “Studies show that where schools increase opportunities for the arts for all students, test scores rise proportionately…Although pull-out instrumental lessons in the intermediate grades often come under scrutiny, largely due to scheduling, research has shown that creating time in the school day for band, orchestra or choir has no impact on participants’ test scores.”
__Schools that have high quality music programs have significantly higher graduation rate (90.9%) as compared to those without (72.9%). Attendance is $$$$ to the district, as also shown in an AUSD study.
__One of the largest under graduate majors accepted to medical school are music majors.
__Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs). From the Texas Commission on Drug & Alcohol Abuse
__Almost all colleges and universities have bands and orchestras and offer scholarships to play.
__Many large medical and technology companies have their own employee music groups for fun!
__California employs thousands in the area of performing arts!
__Music study in our schools has led to successful careers for many AUSD graduates, including Academy Awards!
__The city of Antioch has a history of supporting the arts! AUSD vision statement states the value of this!
